Compact, Reliable, and Efficient Ring Main Unit Solutions

Ring main units (RMUs) are compact, fully enclosed, factory-prefabricated switchgear systems designed for medium-voltage power distribution. They are easy to replace, require minimal maintenance, and provide a high level of protection. By allowing multi-directional power flow, they ensure a continuous power supply even during partial grid failures. With integrated switching, protection, and control functions, RMUs enable safe and uninterrupted power distribution.

TOONICE RMUs are available in a range of voltage options for both indoor and outdoor applications. They reduce environmental impact without compromising performance. Whether upgrading existing infrastructure or deploying new secondary switchgear, TOONICE provides efficient, sustainable, and future-ready power distribution solutions.

Our portfolio includes air-insulated, gas-insulated, and oil-insulated RMUs, all compliant with international power distribution standards. The latest air-insulated models use synthetic air, eliminating the need for sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆), and are available in various configurations to meet specific requirements. Advanced engineering and rigorous testing ensure high reliability, low maintenance costs, and long-term operational stability.

Solid Insulated Switchgear

Solid insulated switchgear (SIS) is an advanced medium-voltage solution that uses solid-state insulation instead of gas or oil insulation, enabling safe, environmentally friendly, and maintenance-free operation. Its compact, modular design facilitates easy installation and flexible configuration, providing reliable, efficient, and sustainable power distribution for modern power systems.

Gas Insulated Switchgear

Our gas insulated ring main units are compact, highly reliable, and suitable for locations with limited space or harsh climates. These units are insulated with SF₆gas, providing excellent safety and operational performance.

Air Insulated Switchgear

Our air insulated RMUs are designed to balance high performance and sustainability. These SF₆-free units use synthetic air insulation materials, providing the same robust protection and reliability while delivering significant environmental benefits by eliminating harmful greenhouse gases.

FAQs

Why is it called a “ring” main unit?

Because it’s used in a ring (loop) network, where power can flow from two directions. If one side fails, supply continues from the other side, better reliability.

What voltage levels do RMUs operate at?

Typically:

  • 6 kV
  • 11 kV
  • 22 kV
  • 33 kV

What is SF₆ in RMUs, and is it safe?

SF₆ is a gas with excellent insulation properties

Safe when sealed, but it’s a greenhouse gas

Many manufacturers now offer SF₆-free RMUs due to environmental regulations

How often do RMUs require maintenance?

Gas-insulated RMUs: Very low (often 10–20 years)

Solid insulated RMUs: Minimal

Routine inspections still recommended per utility standards
